Thank you so much for ordering your seedlings from a local farmer, it’s appreciated! Your plants are at various stages of their young lives so we’ve put together some tips to help provide you with a bountiful growing season.
Tomato Tips:
“Harden off” your plants before planting. This means gently exposing your plants to the environment outside of the greenhouse. Wind, harsh sun and varied temperatures can be hard on the little seedlings, so bring them in and out of the elements for the first few days to get them used to their new home. Some of our plants have already been hardened off in the high tunnel. Darker green leaves are a sign that your plant has been more hardened off than ones with a lighter green leaf.
Watch the weather, we usually subscribe to planting on the Mother’s Day rule. But remember it snowed on May 21 last year!
Choose a bright, airy spot. Plant at least 3’ a part is a good rule.
Planting in pots? Make sure they are at least 14” deep and 15” wide. Some of the patio and dwarf varieties can go in smaller pots.
Plant seedlings deep up to the first or second set of leaves. The stem area will turn into root structure. Long stem? Trench it!
Put a 1/4 cup of Organic Bone Meal, Fish Bone Meal or worm castings in the hole before planting. Even banana peels!
Use a healthy planting soil, 6.0 - 6.8 PH level is ideal, this is harder in Colorado to maintain due to our high alkaline soil.
Use lots of compost when planting your seedlings tomatoes love it!
Plant herbs/marigolds near your crops to deter bugs.
Cage your plants and use walls of water early as season extenders.
These plants are 100% organic we recommend fertilizing them every 4 weeks with Fish Emulsion or other an organic fertilizers.
Water deeply and regularly, don’t over water. Ready go!
